Course Description:
Intro to Creative Arts is an introductory study of theatre and speaking events. Students will study voice and diction, improvisation, technical theatre, competitive drama, and basic communication.

- Understand the performing arts and appreciate them through his newfound knowledge.
- Develop stage presence and voice projection through participation in performance activities.
- Develop speaking and listening skills used in the classroom and in everyday life.
- Understand the basic oral interpretation events involved in competitive drama.
- Develop research skills and argumentation techniques used in debate.
Course Requirements and Assessment:
- Participation: This class is a performance laboratory; attendance and participation are essential for grading purposes. Students must remain consistently involved with daily activities; it is NOT an option to NOT participate. In class participation is a big part of the semester grade in this class. Students must come to class with an open mind and be willing to try to the best of their ability the activities in class.
- Performances: The majority of the total grade for the semester will be based on each student’s performance during scene work and speech performance events. Ms. De Vrieze must approve scripted assignments prior to performance. Improvised scenes will be respectful and appropriate for the Junior High school classroom. All school rules apply during class and must be in consideration during scene work. Students who do not follow the school rules will have consequences outlined in the student handbook.
- Tests: There will be written exams in this course. Students will be given notice of when these exams will be given and should use time given in class to study. However, will need to use study techniques on their own time in order to be fully prepared.
- Homework: Homework will be very minimal in this class. There will be times when I ask the students to do some homework but not very often. With this being said I do not expect excuses for homework not getting accomplished. Since it is a rare occasion I expect students to finish it and have it ready to turn in when it is due.
- Grading Scale: The semester grade will be based on four components: Performances 40%, Unit tests/Quizzes 20%, daily participation 20%, homework and research 20%.
